Select Team Tryout and Selection Policy

Select Team Tryout and Selection Policy

U10 A,B,C Select Teams
U12 & U14 MTOC & Nashoba Cup Teams

Objective
The objective of the Northborough Youth Soccer Association (NYSA) is to provide players that qualify for select teams the highest level of competition. NYSA is a member club of Nashoba Valley Youth Soccer League (NVYSL), which is a Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) affiliated league, allowed to participate in tournaments and championships sponsored by MYSA. The NYSA Executive Board of Directors may waiver any process or requirement within this policy.

MTOC, Nashoba Cup and U10 A,B,C teams
MTOC and Nashoba Cup teams will be selected in the U12 and U14 age/sex groupings, to play in NVYSL. U10 A, B, & C select teams will play in NVYSL in its small-sided format. The NVYSL U10 is a recreational non-results oriented division. All teams from division A to n are considered recreational teams. NYSA conducts a U10 tryout to identify the advanced skill players to play on the U10 A, B, & C select teams.

Player Eligibility
In order to tryout for any MTOC, Nashoba Cup or U10 A, B, or C select team, a player must reside in the town of Northborough and be registered with NYSA.

MTOC, Nashoba Cup and U10 ABC team coaches
Prior to the tryouts the select team coordinator shall collect applications from all coaches who wish to apply to coach an MTOC, Nashoba Cup or U10 A, B, or C select team. (U16 coach applications for the Spring will be collected by December 15th). After the tryouts, the select team coordinator will recommend the MTOC, Nashoba Cup and U10 A, B, and C select team coaches for each age/sex grouping (see the Select Team Coach's Application process). All MTOC and U10 A select team coaches are required to hold an MYSA, or equivalent, coaching license as follows; U10, F license; U12 and U14, E license. All MTOC, Nashoba Cup and U10 A, B, & C select team coaches will choose their own assistant coaches, subject to the approval of the NYSA Executive Board of Directors. A coach may only be the head coach of one select team per season.

Tryouts
NYSA will conduct tryouts in a fair and equitable manner affording each player the opportunity to demonstrate his/her talents to a group of qualified evaluators.

A standardized, scored tryout will be conducted at each age/sex grouping. Tryouts will be held once a year, during the spring season for play in the upcoming fall season and following year's spring season.

There will be two scheduled tryout dates for each age/sex grouping, allowing as many players as possible the opportunity to tryout. It is beneficial for the player to attend both tryout dates, as the better of the two scores will then be used in the final evaluation.

All Tryouts will be observed scrimmages.

A player must attend one tryout date for their respective age/sex grouping, to be eligible to play for any select team in that age/sex grouping. It is understood that all players are trying out for the MTOC or U10 A select team for their age/sex group and will participate on that team if selected.

NYSA supports the playing up policies as outlined by higher authority organizations such as United States Soccer Federation, United States Youth Soccer Association, and MYSA.
NYSA supports a player to play up if he/she

  1. is an “automatic” to the U10A and MTOC team as defined by:
    1. U10 – top 6
    2. U12 – top 8
    3. U14 – top 10
  2. has a birth date after the cut off date (7/31) but he/she wants to remain with his/her classmates.

Players should bring plenty of water and are required to wear cleats and shinguards.

Evaluation Process
Prior to the tryouts the select team coordinator shall choose at least five, but not more than twelve evaluators. The goal is to have two evaluators for each station, with an evaluator independent of NYSA at each tryout station. The NYSA Executive Board of Director's goal is to recruit external coaches to run each of the tryout stations (i.e. from MYSA, MPS, Play Soccer or some other such coaching/training organization).

Any person applying for a coaching position cannot evaluate the players for that age/sex group. They are permitted to observe the tryouts and make notes on the players for their own use in the event they are selected to coach. Additionally, evaluators cannot evaluate within an age/sex group for which they have a child eligible to play, even if the child is not attending the tryouts.

After the tryouts and evaluations, the select team coordinator shall collect and tabulate all scores. The calculations will be reviewed and verified by at least two other individuals. All scores will be kept confidential.

Player Selection Process
Fall Season

The MTOC and U10 A select team coaches in each age/sex group will be given a list of the following tryout participants and their respective scores:

U10 – Top 18
U12 – Top 21
U14 – Top 24
U12 and U14 coaches will also receive goalie evaluations for his/her age group.

In the U10 age/sex groupings, those individuals with the top six scores will automatically be selected to the U10 A select team. The U10 A select team coach will select the balance of the team. The coach's selections may not exceed the 18th ranked player on the tryout list. If the coach wishes to draw from players below the 18th ranked player he/she must make a request to the select team coordinator and select team committee for approval.

In the U12 age/sex groupings, those individuals with the top eight scores will automatically be selected to the MTOC team. The MTOC coach will select the balance of the team. The coach's selections may not exceed the 21st ranked player from the tryout list. If a coach wishes to draw from players below the 21st ranked player then he/she must make a request to the select team coordinator and select team committee for approval.

In the U14 age/sex groupings, those individuals with the top ten scores will automatically be selected to the MTOC team. The MTOC coach will select the balance of the team. The coach's selections may not exceed the 24th ranked player from the tryout list. If a coach wishes to draw from players below the 24th ranked player then he/she must make a request to the select team coordinator and select team committee for approval.

After the MTOC and U10 A select teams have been selected, the Nashoba Cup and U10 B select team coach will be given a list of the next 18(U10), 21(U12), and 24(U14) tryout participants and their scores. In the U10 age/sex groupings, the next six highest scores remaining on the list will automatically be selected to the U10 B select team. The coach will then select the balance of the team. The same rules apply for the U10 B select coach's selection process as did for the U10 A select coach. Finally, the next six highest scores remaining on the list will automatically be selected to the U10 C select team. The coach will then select the balance of the team. The same rules apply for the U10 C select coach's selection process as did for the U10 A and U10 B select coaches.

In the U12 Nashoba Cup teams the next eight highest scores remaining on the list will automatically be selected to the Nashoba Cup team. The coach will then select the balance of the team using the same coach's selection rules as the MTOC team.

In the U14 Nashoba Cup teams the next ten highest scores remaining on the list will automatically be selected to the Nashoba Cup team. The coach will then select the balance of the team using the same coach's selection rules as the MTOC team.

All players will be notified of their selection in writing, or via e-mail, within three days of the MTOC finals. A player selected will have ten days to accept or decline the select team offered. The player is expected to sign and return a commitment letter should he/she be accepting the select team offered. The player is expected to fully support the team by attending two practices a week as scheduled by the coach. The only exception to this would be practices with a higher team as delineated by the player's priorities that has been adopted by MYSA and all the leagues affiliated with MYSA.

If any selected player declines to play on the offered select team, that team's coach shall have ten days to fill that position with any other eligible player. If any selected player declines to play on the offered select team, in either the fall or spring season, that player will not be eligible to play for any other select team in that season.

Spring Season

The automatically selected players that participated in the fall season remain automatic selections, for the same age/sex grouping, for the spring season. The MTOC, Nashoba Cup and U10 A, B, & C select team coaches may change their coach's selected players for the spring season. All new selections by the coach must meet the player eligibility requirements as outlined in the fall season.

Any player dropped from a select team, except those dropped for disciplinary or attendance reasons will be placed on the next lower select team. Any MTOC or U10 A select team player dropped will be placed on the Nashoba Cup or U10 B select team. Any Nashoba Cup player dropped from the team will be offered to play on an NYSA (NVYSL-affiliated) recreational team in the same age/sex grouping. Any U10 B select team player dropped will be offered to play on the U10 C select team, and any U10 C select team player dropped will be offered to play on an NYSA (NVYSL-affiliated) recreational team in the U10 age/sex grouping.

An MTOC, Nashoba Cup or U10 A, B, or C select team coach may only drop an automatically selected player for disciplinary or attendance issues, and only after discussions with the select team coordinator and the NYSA Executive Board of Directors. The coach will notify any player, being dropped from a select team, before December 15th.

Only newly selected players will be notified in writing, which will be done on or before January 15th. Those players will have until January 30th to accept or decline the select team position offered. All select team players must be registered with NYSA prior to participating in games or practices for the spring season.
